Brazil beats Chile 3-0 in 2010 World Cup qualifier

SANTIAGO, Chile : Luis Fabiano notched two goals for Brazil to lead them in a 3-0 victory over Chile on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, In the seventh round of the World Cup 2010 South American zone qualifying series.

The game’s first goal came in the 21th minute, when Ronaldinho sent a free kick to the area and Luis Fabiano scored with a header.

In the 35th minute of the first half, Brazil lost an excellent opportunity to score their second goal. Diego was taken down in the penalty box and was rightfully awarded a penalty kick. But Ronaldinho Gaucho, playing his first full international since last November, was thwarted when Bravo dived to his right and pushed the ball around the post.

Brazil’s second goal of the first half came in the 44th minute. The team captain, Lucio, crossed the ball to Luis Fabiano, who then dished the ball off to a wide open Robinho who took his time and fired the ball into the upper left side of the goal.

Luis Fabiano scored again in the 83nd minute, after dribbling past defender Gary Medel to score with a shot which went through Bravo’s legs

The second half got off to a violent start. The Brazilian midfielder, Klebber, was expelled from the game after receiving his second yellow card in the 1st minute, and Valdivia followed in the 62nd for a dangerous challenge on Luis Fabiano.

In total, there were six yellow cards and two red cards issued in the second half.

Brazil moved from sixth up to second in the 10-team South American group with 12 points from seven games, ahead of Argentina on goal difference and two points behind Paraguay. Brazilian coach, Dunga  went into the game under huge pressure after a run of poor results, worsened by the failure of the Olympic team, which he also coached, to win a gold medal in Beijing. Brazilian media said before the game that anything but a win would end Dunga’s two-year spell in charge.

On Wednesday, Chile will host Colombia, and Brazil will welcome Bolivia.
