Amapa State:
Amapa is a small Brazilian State situated to the north of Para State off the North Atlantic Ocean. The State is bordered to its north by French Guiana and Suriname. Amapa is grouped under the North Region together with; Acre, Amazonas, Para, Rondonia, Roraima and Tocantins. The State has a healthy Rainforest Vegetation and an abundance of wildlife. Amapa has a small population of just about half a million people.
Economy and Tourism:
The manufacturing industry is prominent especially in Macapa City and produces; motor vehicles, rubber and vehicle spare parts. Mining is also important here producing; iron ore and gold.
Tourism is a major service industry. Visitors are attracted to the State’s wildlife reservations, beaches and historic buildings. Wildlife to be found here includes; alligators, turtles, armadillo, the ant eater and flamingo. The Sao Jose Fortress is a centuries old building constructed by the Portuguese to protect the area from invasion. It has now been turned into a museum open to the public.

Macapa City:
Macapa is the Capital City of Amapa State and accounts for a large percentage of the State’s population being home to about 350,000 people. The City is served by the Macapa International Airport.
Other important cities are; Porto Santana and Vila Velha.
