Bahia State:
Bahia is a fairly large eastern Brazilian State located off the Atlantic Ocean to the north of Minas Gerais State. The State’s history began when the Portuguese arrived and established the colonial settlement of Salvador in 1547.
The State initially developed as an important entry point for Slave ships from Africa to Brazil. Agriculture also dominated early Bahia with a number of Sugarcane plantations setup around the state. Salvador City is the capital of Bahia State.
Economy:
Bahia today has a fairly stable economy that is based on; agriculture and livestock production and manufacturing industries producing; automobiles and petrochemicals.
Cities and towns:
Salvador: A typically culturally rich and vibrant Brazilian City, Salvador has a comprehensively developed tourist infrastructure which features a variety of affordable accommodation options, a good public bus transport system, restaurants and cafes. The City is served by the Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport situated in the outskirts north of the Salvador City Centre.
Tourism:
Bahia’s main tourist attractions are its beaches most of which are situated in or near the city of Salvador. There are also a number of cultural events and festivals that take place here such as; the Carnaval and the Trio Eletricos.
The State has a large Afro-Brazilian population which has placed its influence on local cuisine served at many of the restaurants here.
