The Chapada Diamantina National Park

Commonly referred to as Brazil’s “lost world”, the Chapada Diamantina National park offers spectacular scenery which includes; amazing rock formations, underground rivers, underground caves, lakes, waterfalls and mesas.

Mesas: a mesa is a broad hill with a flat top that is normally surrounded by cliffs and is topped with a strong rock layer resistant to natural erosion.

The Parks is situated to the north of Belo Horizonte in the Northeastern State of Bahia. Chapada Diamantina traces its origins from the early 19th century when diamonds were discovered in the region which gave birth to the town of Lencois in the ensuing prospector influx to the region. The park is situated near Lencois which is mainly a tourist town. The Chapada Diamantina Park was created in 1985.

Tourism in the region:

Visitors to the region can indulge in a number of enjoyable outdoor activities which include; treks, hiking, sightseeing and diving. You can also take a tour of Lencois and view some of this old mining town’s historic buildings that have been well preserved and are a constant reminder of the town’s past.

The town of Lencois has a number of good hotels and lodges for temporary accommodation. There are also a number of restaurants and local pubs known as Cantinas.
