Gay & Lesbian Tourists

Gay and Lesbian travelers to Brazil:

Brazil is a more open society when compared to other South American Nations. There is more tolerance for Gay and Lesbian people especially in the major cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Salvador. Attitudes are more reserved in the smaller towns and cities especially in the inland areas where the subject is still not a welcome issue.

Though it may be accepted, Gay and Lesbian activities in Brazil are somewhat discreet and not usually out on the open as is common in many European Nations, Australasia and North America. A downside to the local Gay scene is the high HIV/AIDS infection rate, mainly due to unsafe sexual practices. Visitors are advised to use protection if they intend to engage in such activities.

Visitors to the Country are however advised to be cautious as unconcealed Homosexual tendencies can sometimes attract negative attention from locals. There have been a number of homicides and attacks against Gay people in some of the country’s cities in recent times.
