A beautiful City and a popular tourist destination, Maceio is an eastern Brazilian city, the capital and largest city of the Alagoas State. The name Maceio is a native Indian word describing the direction of flow of streams emptying into lakes. The city was named so because of the many small lakes and streams here. Maceio is also a vital port city along the Brazilian east coast. Established as a settlement village in 1815, Maceio was declared the State Capital in 1839 and granted City status.

Economy:

Maceio is home to a number of industries and is the main commercial center in Alagoas. Major industries in the city are; chemicals and agricultural exports (consisting mainly of sugar and livestock products). The services sector employs a large percentage of Maceio’s population especially in the ever improving tourism industry.

Air services:

Maceio is served by the Zumbi dos Palmares airport, which caters mainly for domestic inter-city flights.

Tourism:

The main attraction for visitors to the city is its white sandy beaches which are easily accessible and not very crowded. The key beaches are; Ponta Verde, Pajucara, Sete Coqueiros, Jatiuca and Jacarecica. The beach areas are normally lined with pubs, night clubs and restaurants providing entertainment within easy reach. There are also a number of historical buildings here such as; the Cathedral of our lady of pleasures and the Teatro Deodoro.
