The Manaus Opera house is an architectural testament to Manaus’ importance as a cultural centre in the Amazonas State of Brazil. The building was constructed with materials from as far as Europe including Paintings by Domenico de Angelis that adorn the ceilings.
The Opera house was officially opened on the 31st of December 1896. It is also referred to as the Teatro Amazonas.
After a few decades of closure, the Opera House was rehabilitated and reopened in 1990 showing the State Government’s commitment to maintaining the buildings stature. Today it regularly hosts a number of local and foreign artistes, with choirs, theatre groups, musicians and ballet troupes performing here.
Public tours of this magnificent building are conducted from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 9pm and on Sundays from 4pm to 9pm. There are self guided tours or you can pay for a local guide. General entry fees are about $5 per person.
