Niteroi City

Niteroi is a beach side City in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The City is regarded to have the best living standards in the state. Niteroi was established as an indigenous American Indian settlement on land provided by the then Portuguese King in 1573. It is probably the only town or city in the country that was not established by foreigners. Today Niteroi is home to a diverse culture with the indigenous Indians becoming either extinct or absorbed by the early 1800s. The city is home to an estimated 470,000 residents.

The beaches of Niteroi are beautiful and amazing; an ideal place to spend your day lazing away. Popular beaches in Niteroi are: Sossego, Itacoatiara (the best of the lot), Itaipu, Camboinhas and Piratininga.

The Santa Cruz Fortress:

A historic monument, the Fortaleza de Santa Cruz was built in 1555 by the French and became a key point in the defense of the bay of Guanabara.

The Contemporary Art Museum:

The museum’s building is uniquely shaped like something out of space; similar to a flying saucer. The museum has excellent view points from where you can see; Rio and Guanabara Bay.
