Pernambuco is a northeastern Brazilian State, located to the north of Bahia, off the North Atlantic. The state’s history dates back to 1534 when the Capitancy of Pernambuco was created. The State has a population of about 8 million people.
Economy and Tourism:
Pernambuco has one of the strongest economies in the region owing to its varied industrial sector. The main industries here are; metallurgy, food processing, electronics, chemicals, textiles and plastics. Agriculture still plays an important role producing; grapes, tomatoes, onions and mangoes.
The tourism industry in Pernambuco has been impressive over the last few years. Visitors are attracted to; the beaches along the coast, the beautiful archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Museums, historic architecture and rich cultural festivities.

Recife is an important northern Brazilian port city and the capital of Pernambuco State. Recife is also one of the largest cities in the country with an estimated 1.5 million residents. The City’s history dates back to 1534 when it was established as the capital of the Pernambuco Capitancy under Portuguese Colonization. The city prospered along with its state mainly due to the fertile lands here that were used as sugarcane plantations and Brazil-Wood.
Other major cities are; Paulista, Olinda, Caruaru, Garanhuns and Cabo de Sante Agostinho.
