Known
as German-Brazil for its rich German influences, Pomerode is one
of the largest and interesting cities in the State of Santa Catarina
which is situated in Southern Brazil. Towns and Cities south of
the Country have heavy German influences in their local culture.
This is mainly because of its origins as a town founded in the
late 1800s by Pomeranian German immigrants. Approximately 90 percent
of Pomerode’s population is of German descent and the German
language is widely spoken here and can be termed as a local language.
German is even taught as part of the education curriculum in many
schools in Santa Catarina.
Economy:
The Pomerode economy is based mainly on its manufacturing industry
which employs a large part of the City’s population.
Tourist activities:
The city has a number of attractions to offer its visitors including;
a Zoological Garden, the Pomerano Museum, a host of restaurants
and pubs where you can try some of the local brews. The Oktoberfest
held in the nearby city of Blumenau is a major festival and the
second largest of its kind to the one held in Munich, Germany.
The city also has a number of quality and fairly priced hotels
and motels for the visitor.
