Recife is an important northern Brazilian port city and the capital of Pernambuco State. Recife is also one of the largest cities in the country with an estimated 1.5 million residents. The City’s history dates back to 1534 when it was established as the capital of the Pernambuco Capitancy under Portuguese Colonization. The city prospered along with its state mainly due to the fertile lands here that were used as sugarcane plantations and Brazil-Wood.
Today, Recife is one of the most modern Brazilian cities with good infrastructure and facilities for visitors.

The manufacturing and processing industries are integral to the city’s economy. Local industries here specialize in; textiles, food, drinks, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and minerals. The City is also home to one of the busiest ports on the Brazilian coastline.

Recife is served by the Guararapes International airport which also caters for frequent domestic flights between Brazil’s major cities.
Tourism:
The tourism industry plays a major role in Recife’s economy. The city attracts numerous visitors each year, mainly for its spectacular beaches and entertainment. Popular beaches here are; Boa Viagem: this is the most popular beach in the city, lined with hotels, restaurants and pubs within easy reach. Other beaches are; Porto de Galinhas, Maria Farinha and Itamaraca. The Carnaval held in Recife is considered to be one of the best in the country. There are also a number of old churches, historical monuments and buildings, shopping centers, museums and theaters.
