Rio de Janeiro situated in a State sharing the same name in south-eastern Brazil. It is the second largest city in the Country after Sao Paulo with a population of approximately 6 million residents.

Rio de Janeiro which is Portuguese for “River of January” was first reached by Portuguese explorers in 1502. It was the Brazilian capital until 1960 being replaced by Brasilia.

Rio is a city famous for its entertainment. The City’s is home to a number of sporting events, cultural exhibitions and carnivals which attract numerous local and foreign participants. There are also the popular tourist beach areas of Ipanema and Copacabana which are lined with hotels, resorts and nightclubs.

The Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) is a famous statue situated at the top of the Corcovado Mountain. This statue is a symbol of the Christian faith and the friendly and welcoming nature of Rio’s people.

The city’s natural landscape, weather and geographical location make it ideal for outdoor activities which include; fishing, hang gliding, rock climbing, beach volleyball, beach football, Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts) and Surfing.

The Favelas (shanty towns) situated at the edges of the City’s hillsides are a testament to the major class differences in Rio’s residents.

Rio is served by the Galeao International airport and the Santos Dumont airport which caters for domestic and regional flights.
