Rio Grande Do Sul which is Portuguese for “the large river in the south” is a Brazilian State classified under the country’s Southern Region together with Santa Catarina and Parana States. Rio Grande Do Sul is situated at the southernmost tip of the South American Continent.
This is a developed and technologically capable State, home to a number of prominent educational institutions and industries.
Economy and tourism:
Agriculture dominates Rio Grande Do Sul’s economy. The State is a leading provider of livestock and beef products. Agriculture here produces Rice and Tobacco. Rio Grande Do Sul is also home to; petrochemical, petroleum refinery, chemicals and footwear.

Among the largest cities in Brazil with an estimate population of 1.4 million residents, Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande Do Sul State at the south of the country.
The city’s history dates back to the mid 1700s when it was established for logistic purposes by the Portuguese colonizers to protect their colony from potential intrusion by the Spanish. Today, Porto Alegre is a major industrial and commerce centre in southern Brazil. The City’s Port is one of the busiest along the country’s coastline.
Other major cities here are; Rio Grande, Novo Hamburgo, Santa Maria, Canoas and Pelotas.
