The
City of Sao Luis is home to some of the most beautiful and unhampered
South American beaches. Originally founded by the French in 1612,
the city has more of a Portuguese style and architecture. There
are a number of buildings around the city that are a testament
to this.
Sao Luis is the Capital of the Brazilian State of Maranhao situated
off the Atlantic Ocean. The city was declared a Cultural Heritage
site by the United Nations in 1997.
Despite this Sao Luis is a poorly managed city displaying the
differences in wealth distribution in the Country. The city still
experiences electricity outages, poor health services and a host
of other problems associated with mismanagement. Since the early
1990s a number of restoration projects have been conducted to
historically significant buildings around the city.
Sao Luis however has a number of attractions to offer for the
tourist. This includes;
The Bumba meu Boi: an annual cultural festival held between
the 13th and 30th of June.
The beautiful beaches which include; Moitas, Morro do Boi,
Ponta do Mangue.
The Parque Nacional dos Lencois: an ecological wonder on its
own. Here you can view; sand dunes, rivers and lakes.
There are over 3,500 colonial to be seen at the Centro Historico.
Air transport:
Sao Luis is served by the Marechal Cunha Machado International
Airport which also caters for domestic flights.
